- Endodontic product used in dentistry for reinforcing and supporting a tooth after a root canal procedure
Uses:
- Reinforcing endodontically treated teeth:
- After a root canal, a tooth may lose a significant amount of its internal structure and become brittle and prone to fracture
- The carbon fiber post is placed inside the root canal to provide internal reinforcement and help support the tooth
- Supporting a dental restoration:
- When there is not enough tooth structure remaining to support a crown or other restoration, the carbon fiber post acts as a foundation for the core build-up material
- The final restoration is then cemented over this reinforced core
- Dissipating occlusal stress:
- Unlike traditional metal posts, which can be much stiffer than natural tooth structure, carbon fiber posts have an elasticity similar to dentin
- This allows the post to flex with the tooth under chewing pressure, distributing forces more evenly and reducing the risk of root fracture
- Providing a secure foundation for fillings:
- After the post is cemented, the remaining lost tooth structure is rebuilt around it using a core build-up material. The post provides a secure anchor for this material, ensuring the filling is stable and long-lasting
Features:
- Strong and resilient:
- The posts are made from carbon fiber bundles embedded in a special composite material, making them very strong and virtually unbreakable
- Dentin-like elasticity:
- The elasticity of the carbon fiber is similar to that of natural dentin, which allows the post to flex with the tooth and reduces the chance of stress-related fractures
- Multi-axial construction:
- The fibers are braided in a multi-axial arrangement, which provides superior resistance to bending and torsion forces
- Biocompatible and non-corrosive:
- The posts are composed of fiber-reinforced epoxy resin, which is biocompatible and will not corrode in the oral environment
- Passive retention:
- The posts feature passive retention slots instead of active cutting threads, which helps to dissipate occlusal stress
