- A sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution used for fluid and electrolyte management
Uses
- This "normal saline" solution is used for a variety of clinical applications in both adults and pediatric patients
- Fluid resuscitation:
- Restores hydration in patients who have experienced fluid loss due to dehydration, trauma, or surgery
- Electrolyte replenishment:
- Replaces lost sodium and chloride to correct electrolyte imbalances
- Medication dilution:
- Acts as a sterile vehicle for the intravenous administration of compatible drugs
- Blood transfusions:
- May be used to initiate and terminate blood transfusions
- Post-operative care:
- Supports patient recovery after surgery by maintaining fluid balance
- Hemodialysis:
- Used as a priming solution for hemodialysis procedures
- Critical care:
- Essential in emergency departments and intensive care units for rapid fluid replacement
Features
- Isotonic solution:
- The 0.9% sodium chloride concentration closely matches the body's natural fluid osmolarity (approximately 308 mOsmol/L), making it safe for intravenous use
- Secure packaging:
- The 500mL EXCEL Plus container is designed for secure, tamper-evident handling
- It does not contain PVC, DEHP, or natural rubber latex, which reduces the risk of contamination and drug incompatibility
- Sterile and nonpyrogenic:
- The solution is free of bacteria and other fever-inducing substances, ensuring patient safety during administration
- Convenient volume:
- The 500mL bag provides a moderate volume suitable for many fluid and electrolyte replacement needs
Side effects
- Adverse reactions are possible, especially with improper administration
- Fluid overload:
- Over-infusion can lead to overhydration, which may cause pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs), peripheral edema (swelling), and weight gain
- Electrolyte imbalances:
- Hypernatremia (high sodium):
- Can cause swelling, increased blood pressure, and, in severe cases, seizures or weakness
- Hyperchloremia (high chloride):
- High levels of chloride ions can cause an acidifying effect
- Injection site reactions:
- Possible reactions at the injection site include infection, phlebitis (inflammation of the vein), and venous thrombosis (blood clots)
- Extravasation:
- The solution can leak out of the vein into surrounding tissue, causing irritation or damage
- Allergic reactions:
- Although rare, some individuals may experience a serious allergic reaction, with symptoms such as breathing problems, hives, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue
