Reduction of Intracranial Pressure (ICP) and Treatment of Cerebral Edema:
- This is one of its most important uses
- In conditions like head trauma, brain tumors, or stroke, fluid can build up in the brain, increasing pressure
- Mannitol helps to draw this excess fluid out of the brain tissue, reducing the pressure and preventing further damage
- Reduction of Elevated Intraocular Pressure:
- Used to quickly lower the pressure inside the eye, for example, in cases of acute glaucoma or before certain eye surgeries
- Promoting Urinary Excretion of Toxic Substances:
- Can be used in cases of drug overdose or poisoning to increase urine flow and help flush toxins out of the body before they can cause more harm
