- Site-specific, designed for removing calculus and performing root planing on the distal surfaces of posterior teeth
Uses
- Site-specific scaling:
- The Gracey 17/18's design is specifically for accessing and cleaning the distal surfaces of molars and premolars
- Periodontal debridement:
- It is used to remove calculus and plaque from subgingival (below the gumline) surfaces and to smooth root surfaces as part of periodontal therapy
- Access to posterior teeth:
- The highly angled shank is designed for improved access to the difficult-to-reach distal surfaces of posterior teeth, making it more efficient than other curettes for this specific purpose
- Improved access:
- Its extended shank provides excellent reach into deep periodontal pockets
Features
- Site-specific blade:
- The blade is offset at a 70-degree angle to the terminal shank
- This provides the correct angulation for adapting the blade to the tooth's surface with a parallel shank position
- Longer terminal shank:
- Compared to a standard Gracey, the 17/18 has a terminal shank that is approximately 3 mm longer which provides better reach into deep periodontal pockets and access to the last molars
- Shorter blade:
- The blade is about 1mm shorter than a standard Gracey blade which enhances adaptation, reduces tissue distention, and improves access to root concavities and furcation areas
- Accentuated angles:
- The exaggerated shank bends are designed for better crown clearance and easier handle positioning, especially in the mandibular arch where the opposing maxillary arch can be obstructive
- Ergonomic Handle:
- Features a lightweight (approximately 16g) polymer handle with medical-grade silicone cushion grips, designed to reduce hand and wrist fatigue and improve tactile sensitivity
- SmartSharp Technology:
- Manufactured with a proprietary process to ensure a well-defined edge that is easier to re-sharpen, allowing clinicians to apply less pressure and use fewer strokes
- Durable Edges:
- The instrument features a heat-treated, cryo-hardened stainless steel process that ensures edges stay sharp longer
- Autoclavable:
- The entire instrument is fully sterilizable for clinical use
