- It is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution supplied in a 250mL EXCEL IV bag
- This "normal saline" solution is used in healthcare for fluid and electrolyte
Uses
- Intravenous (IV) therapy:
- It is used to supply water and salt to the body and as a source of electrolytes for hydration
- Fluid resuscitation:
- Restores hydration in patients with significant fluid loss from illness, surgery, or trauma
- Electrolyte replacement:
- Replenishes sodium and chloride levels in patients with imbalances caused by dehydration, vomiting, or other conditions
- Medication dilution:
- Used as a diluent for compatible medications during IV administration
- Hemodialysis:
- Functions as a priming solution for hemodialysis procedures
- Blood transfusions:
- Can be used to initiate and terminate blood transfusions
Features
- EXCEL IV container:
- The 250mL bag is made from a special multilayered film that is not made with PVC, DEHP, or natural rubber latex
- This minimizes patient exposure to potentially harmful plasticizers
- Sterile and isotonic:
- The solution is sterile, nonpyrogenic, and has an osmolarity of approximately 310 mOsmol/liter, making it isotonic with body fluids
- Safe for sensitive patients:
- Not being made with latex, PVC, or DEHP makes it safer for patients with sensitivities to these materials
- Easy to view:
- The container's clear material makes it easy to inspect the solution.
Side effects
- While considered safe when administered correctly, potential side effects are possible
- Fluid overload:
- Excessive infusion can lead to overhydration, potentially causing swelling (edema), pulmonary congestion, or weight gain
- Electrolyte imbalances:
- Hypernatremia:
- High sodium levels can cause water retention, edema, and exacerbate congestive heart failure
- Hyperchloremia:
- An excess of chloride can lead to an acidifying effect
- Hyponatremia:
- Low sodium levels can cause confusion, seizures, or swelling
- Injection site reactions:
- Can include infection, venous thrombosis, or phlebitis at the injection site
- Allergic-type reactions:
- Though rare, some individuals may experience a serious reaction with symptoms like swelling, rash, wheezing, or difficulty breathing
