- sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution supplied in a 1000mL EXCEL Plus IV bag for intravenous administration
- This product is used in healthcare facilities for fluid and electrolyte management in adult and pediatric patients
Uses
- Fluid and electrolyte replenishment:
- The 0.9% concentration (also known as normal saline) is isotonic to body fluids, making it ideal for replacing lost fluids and sodium
- Hydration therapy:
- It is used to prevent or treat dehydration
- Post-operative care:
- Commonly administered to maintain fluid balance and support blood pressure after surgery
- Emergency medical care:
- Vital for rapid fluid resuscitation in emergency situations like trauma or shock
- Medication dilution:
- Serves as a vehicle for the intravenous administration of compatible medications
- Hemodialysis priming:
- Can be used as a priming solution for hemodialysis procedures
- Blood transfusions:
- Can be used to initiate and terminate blood transfusions without damaging red blood cells
Features
- Isotonic solution:
- With an osmolarity of approximately 308 mOsmol/L, it is isotonic with the body's natural osmolarity, ensuring effective and safe fluid replacement
- Safe packaging (EXCEL Plus):
- The 1000mL IV bag is not made with PVC, DEHP, or natural rubber latex
- This minimizes the risk of adverse patient reactions and drug sorption, which can occur with PVC containers
- Sterile and nonpyrogenic:
- The solution is free of bacteriostatic or antimicrobial agents, making it safe for intravenous infusion
- Environmentally responsible:
- The EXCEL Plus container is designed to reduce environmental impact
Side effects
- While generally safe, adverse reactions are possible and can be related to the solution itself or the administration technique
- Fluid overload:
- Over-infusion can lead to overhydration, which may result in pulmonary congestion, peripheral edema (swelling), or weight gain
- Electrolyte imbalances:
- Hypernatremia (high sodium):
- Can cause swelling, high blood pressure, and, in severe cases, seizures or weakness
- Hyponatremia (low sodium):
- Can lead to confusion, seizures, or swelling
- Hyperchloremia (high chloride):
- Large amounts of chloride ions can cause an acidifying effect
- Injection site reactions:
- Possible reactions include infection, venous thrombosis (blood clots), or phlebitis (vein inflammation)
- Extravasation:
- Accidental leaking of the solution into surrounding tissue can cause irritation or damage
