  • Sterile intravenous (IV) solution in a 1,000mL flexible plastic bag
  • It is used in both adults and pediatric patients to provide a source of electrolytes and water for hydration

Uses

  • This solution is indicated for both adults and pediatric patients
  • Uses include: 
    • Fluid and electrolyte replenishment: 
      • For patients with low blood volume, dehydration, or low blood pressure
    • Metabolic alkalosis: 
      • In cases of fluid loss with mild sodium depletion
    • Alkalinizing agent: 
      • Increases the pH level of the body
    • Surgery and trauma: 
      • Often used to rehydrate or replace fluid loss during and after surgical procedures or in trauma cases

Side effects:

    • Common and injection-site effects

      • Injection site pain, inflammation, swelling, rash, or burning
    • Potentially severe side effects
  • Electrolyte imbalances: 
    • Including hyperkalemia (high potassium), hyponatremia, and hypercalcemia
    • These can cause irregular heartbeat, confusion, muscle weakness, and other symptoms
  • Hypervolemia (fluid overload): 
    • Too much fluid can lead to conditions like pulmonary edema
  • Metabolic alkalosis: 
    • Excessive administration of the lactate component can worsen or cause this condition
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: 
    • In rare cases, severe allergic reactions like anaphylaxis can occur. Signs include rash, hives, and trouble breathing

Considerations for at-risk patients

Patients with certain conditions, such as the following, are at a higher risk of complications and must be monitored carefully: 
    • Severe renal impairment
    • Severe liver disease
    • Congestive heart failure
    • Extensive burns or other severe tissue injury
    • Hypercalcemia or hyperkalemia
